Food Truck Inspections

Food trucks are an innovative way to inject excitement into our culinary landscape and have been warmly embraced across the City. Our aim is to uphold the safety of the community by ensuring that proper protocols are followed.

In order to operate within the City of Richmond, Food Trucks and other Mobile Outdoor Food Service Units (MOFSU) must obtain a City of Richmond business license. As part of the inspection process for this license, MOFSU vendors are required to undergo a fire and life safety inspection through the Greater Vancouver Fire Chief’s Association (GVFCA) inspection program.

For more information about the GVFCA inspection program and its compliance requirements, please refer to the links provided below. Upon passing inspection, compliant trucks will be issued a ‘Lower Mainland’ decal, indicating that, at the time of inspection, the MOFSU met all relevant fire and life safety requirements (ie. fire protection systems and fire extinguishers installed and have been serviced, and other MOFSU systems  applicable gas and electrical decals are provided on the vehicle/trailer).

These decals are issued annually and can be obtained from any participating Fire Department (See List of participating municipalities below).

MOFSU vendors only require one approval decal to operate in all Municipalities that are part of the program, spanning from Whistler to Chilliwack. It should be noted, however, that the decal does not exempt operators from complying with other City bylaw requirements related to Business Licensing, Zoning, and any other applicable regulations.

Once a year, typically in the spring, a MOFSU Inspection Event is held where inspectors from participating jurisdictions gather to conduct fire and life safety inspections for as many vendors as possible. This event is offered free of charge to vendors who attend.

For those unable to attend the annual event, fire inspections can be scheduled throughout the year with participating municipalities. We encourage those who live or work in Richmond to obtain a fire inspection through Richmond Fire-Rescue.

Inspections and reinspections conducted by Richmond Fire-Rescue outside of the MOFSU Inspection Event are subject to fees set in accordance with the City of Richmond Fire Protection and Life Safety Bylaw No. 8306.

MOFSU inspections and reinspections can be with booked with Richmond Fire-Rescue on Wednesdays from 1:00-3:00pm.

(Please note that inspections must be scheduled using the link below.)

Richmond Fire-Rescue will confirm the location for the MOFSU inspection in Richmond after you have booked.
