Al McGrath

Deputy Fire Chief

Al McGrath started his firefighter career in 1993 and moved through the ranks from firefighter to training officer to suppression Captain. Always seeking new challenges, the role of Deputy Chief provided the perfect opportunity for continued learning and development. Overseeing all training aspects of Richmond Fire-Rescue and following the Fire Chiefs’ vision of being the best Fire Department in Canada sets the bar high and makes coming to work exciting.

Al is an avid soccer player and has represented Richmond Fire-Rescue in eight World Police and Fire Games, bringing home two gold and two silver medals.

Al is fortunate enough to be a participant in the City of Richmond’s Corporate Programs Management Group (CPMG). This award-winning City initiative is cross-functional and cross-departmental, thus producing strategic teams and cultivating strong leadership within the City.    

Al’s favourite thing about the city is that it lives up to its values. He feels fortunate to be able to serve the community and work daily with amazing people within Richmond Fire-Rescue and throughout the city.
