Emergency Communications
9-1-1 in a Disaster
A major emergency such as an earthquake can put heavy demand on telephone networks and 9-1-1 services. Keeping unnecessary calls off the system helps emergency calls get through.
01
Call Only for a Serious Emergency Use 9-1-1 when police, fire or medical help is
required immediately.
02
If the Network Is Busy If you hear a busy signal, hang up and try again.
If you receive a recorded announcement, stay on
the line and wait for a call-taker.
03
Do Not Call for Information Do not use 9-1-1 for general disaster updates,
weather, power outages or municipal information.
Use official information sources instead.
Help Keep 9-1-1 Available After a major disaster, avoid unnecessary phone calls and
continue monitoring official websites, radio and television
for instructions and updates.
