The City of Richmond ensures the safety of Richmond’s built environment by regulating building construction and design.
We also enforce the BC Building & Fire Codes, as well as all other applicable standards and regulations.
Some of the regulations used to regulate the built environment are the City’s Fire Protection and Life Safety Bylaw No. 8306, Zoning Bylaw No. 8500 and the Building Regulation Bylaw 7230. These regulations ensure the buildings we live, work and play in are safe and equipped for effective emergency response.
BC Fire Code
This is provincial regulation that generally applies to the ongoing use of existing buildings and facilities. It sets minimum requirements for health, safety and fire protection of buildings and facilities.
BC Building Code
This is a provincial regulation on how new construction, building alterations, repairs and demolitions are completed. It applies throughout the province of British Columbia except for some federal lands and the City of Vancouver.
BC Plumbing Code
A part of the BC Building Code that provides minimum requirements for plumbing installations in buildings to protect health and prevent water or sewer damage.
Bylaws are local regulatory laws that apply to a certain jurisdiction, like
